Coach's comments: "Today's matches constituted a good start to the season. Aside from John Bryant, who competed tenaciously in spite of injury, all of the Choate boys cruised to two wins in our season opener. We'll look to keep up the winning ways this weekend when we host the Pelicans."

Coach's comments: "Collectively we showed better form today than we did on Wednesday, though there are still a lot of sloppy habits we need to eradicate. We didn't drop a game against our less-experienced opponents this afternoon, though the Pelicans have some athleticism among their ranks and should improve rapidly with the good coaching they'll be getting this season."

Coach's comments: "We ran into a very tough (and young!) Brunswick team and for the most part were outclassed in this match. The Wild Boars made their best showings at #3--where Chris Miller played a very impressive match, only to lose in four--and at #6--where Jack Fennebresque won a tight battle between two ninth graders. Though this afternoon's contest with Brunswick represents our first loss of the year, we feel pretty good about where we are as a team at the end of this first phase of the season. Hopefully the guys will get out on the courts during break to work on their games and preserve (and enhance) their fitness. The matches will come fast and furiously in the New Year!"

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars have had a number of close matches with Andover the past few years and thus another 4-3 result surprised no one. Unfortunately, our rivals from the north prevailed this time, winning two of the final three matches to break a 2-2 deadlock. This snapped Choate's four-match winning streak against the Big Blue since 1998. We'll do our best to reverse the Andover result when we see them in Massachusetts in three weeks time."

Coach's comments: "We had better fortune in the second match of the day against Exeter, winning both five-game matches and taking one of three four-game tilts. John Bryant and Jack Fennebresque--our only double winners this day--cruised to convincing 3-0 wins against the Griffins. The other five matches were very competitive. This was a fine contest, as we were pushed hard to earn the victory--a great way to jump start the New Year."

Coach's comments: "Although Taft is not necessarily the juggernaut of a squad it has been the past few years, the Rhinos are still strong. The Tafties played some of their best squash in this Founders League match-up. (According to Coach Frew, the boys on the low end of the ladder played much better against us than they did against Andover and Exeter here at Choate last weekend.) Our guys clearly were outclassed in the top three positions, as they faced a trio of opponents who may be the best top three in New England. We were much more competitive from #4 through #7, but in the end the home team simply competed better. Geordie MacLeod '01 and Jack Fennebresque '04 won games but were not able to sustain enough momentum to take their matches. Having co-captain John Bryant '01 out of action today surely didn't help our cause, but his presence in the line-up wouldn't have tipped the balance to a Wild Boars win in all likelihood. We'll have another shot at Taft at home in a few weeks time, though, so we'll be aiming for a better showing then."

Coach's comments:
"In the 20th edition of the Team Invitational, Choate finished with no
head-to-head wins against the other schools in the competition--which is highly
unusual for us in this event--and yet we come away with a lot of confidence in
our prospects the rest of the season. The Wild Boars were competitive in all
four matches today, even though we were missing injured co-captain John Bryant
'01 (who has been playing #2 and #3 thus far this winter). Having been edged out
by a 3-2 margin three times, it's not hard to imagine we could have even swept
the day's contests had we been at full strength.
"Special kudos are
due Ryan Phelan '01 for winning three of four matches in the top slot--a very
impressive feat. After a slow start this morning, Jack Fennebresque finished the
day strong, reversing last Wednesday's loss to fellow ninth-grader Tucker George
from Taft and bouncing back from a one-game deficit to beat his Deerfield
opponent in the final match of the day."

Coach's comments: "It was a long day on the road, but the Wild Boars dispatched their Millbrook opponents fairly quickly in most of the day's matches. The exceptions were at #5--where Geordie MacLeod had to overcome a sloppy patch to close it out in four--and at #1--where Ryan Phelan ran into a white-hot performance by Millbrook captain Trevor McWilliams. Choate's top player leveled the match, climbing out of a two-game deficit, but couldn't close the deal in the fifth. Interesting footnote: Phelan and McWilliams will be teammates at Colby next year."

Coach's comments: "This scrimmage with the Wesleyan varsity was a good opportunity for us to play a team of bigger and stronger players. While the older players prevailed throughout, most of the matches were competitive. Hopefully this experience will prove useful in the interscholastic contests ahead of us this week."

Coach's comments: "This was a hotly contested match-up between League rivals punctuated by a well-played and dramatic five-game struggle at #3 before a packed gallery. As the afternoon's play unfolded, it quickly became clear that we were outgunned at #1 while our depth made us far superior at #6 and #7. The four matches in between--#2 through #5--thus would decide the contest. Unfortunately we took only one of those four, though we started well in the #2 and #4 tilts. John Bryant's win was a highlight, as the Wild Boar captain returned to action after a couple of weeks on the disabled list. Though his rust was evident, John's competitive tenacity carried the day, as he scrambled for impressive gets and effectively mixed up the pace against a strong Hotchkiss opponent. Even though the team result already had been decided as this final match was being played, a very vocal capacity crowd ratcheted up the pressure as it went into the fifth game, which ultimately fell Choate's way. Though our squad certainly had its chances to take this match, we left Lakeville with a lesson in hand: we know that we will need to play with more intensity as we head into our weekend rematch with Andover. We aspire to reverse our 3-4 loss at the hands of the Big Blue earlier in the month."

Coach's comments:
"The long trip to Andover and the rush to get
underway following SATs in the morning left us ill-prepared for the start of our
match with the host school, as the first game bagels in the lower three contests
indicate. But most of the Choate players fought their way into their matches.
Geordie MacLeod and Patrick Phelan wore down opponents in five games by shrewdly
slowing down the pace of play in the unusually warm Andover courts. Jack
Fennebresque was nearly able to give us a hat trick of comebacks from 0-2, but
he lost control of his shots and his emotions in the fifth game of his match. In
the remaining battles among the top seven, John Bryant was dominant against a
fine opponent, while Chris Miller had a rough debut at #1 and Ryan Phelan and
David Morris continued to suffer through mid-season slumps.
"This loss was more painful than our earlier
defeat at Andover's hands because we felt we could have posted a 5-2 or 6-1 win
had everyone stepped it up this time around. We've now lost three close ones
this season that we could have--and perhaps should have-- won, and that's
frustrating. I hope the match experience will stiffen the resolve of our players
as we head into the final month of the season with nearly half our dual matches
still ahead of us. There were lessons to be learned today in the Andover match
and it would be a shame if we didn't come away from this loss with a sense of
how to improve. I'd like to see more intestinal fortitude the rest of the season
from a few of our guys."

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars coasted without dropping a game. Brooks has fielded some fine teams over the years, but appears to be in the 'down' part of the cycle this winter. After the difficulties we experienced in the first match of the day, a comfortable victory against this ISL school made the long ride home a bit more tolerable."

Coach's comments: "Choate cruised through the T-P squad rather quickly, dropping only one game en route to a sweep of our Founders League opponents. Coach's comments:
"Today's match represented Choate's best shot at
Taft in a number of years and we failed to capitalize on the opportunity. The
Rhinos were mentally tougher in most positions and we squandered a couple of
contests that should have been a lock for us. Taft's top players were simply too
tough at #1 and #2, though our boys battled gamely in those positions. To their
credit, Jack Fennebresque and David Morris played extraordinarily well in the
heart of the line-up, exhibiting great progress since their difficulties against
Hotchkiss and Andover last month; they deserve kudos for stepping up to the
challenge. Elsewhere, we just didn't close the deal, as we were outhustled and
outplayed by Taft counterparts.
"As a team we have
had trouble winning the competitive matches--and today's tilt with Taft
was certainly one of them (for the first time in a long time). We'll need
to do better in few weeks left in the season."

Coach's comments: "This contest was really two matches in one: a trio of hard-fought showdowns that went the distance and a quartet of one-sided wins for the visiting team. The Wildcats are much improved since we last saw them in December and the quality of competition in the top three matches was particularly high."

Coach's comments: "We traveled north today to take on a solid Belmont Hill team--a squad currently in contention for the Independent School League title. The good news is that we finally pulled out a close match after a string of frustrating 3-4 losses. The bad news is that we proved to be surprisingly soft in the middle of the ladder today--the same group that had performed so well against Taft earlier in the week--and even more distressingly, the uncharacteristic behavior of a couple of Choate players left much to be desired. The negatives of the day shouldn't detract from the strong performances put forth by the five victors this afternoon, all of whom won in convincing fashion. We were probably helped a bit by the fact that Belmont Hill had just finished a match with Phillips Exeter before playing us (a match they won 5-2--our own score against Exeter earlier this winter). At this point in the winter, winning a competitive match like this against a strong team can only add to our confidence heading into the final two weeks of the season. There's still a lot of squash ahead of us in the days to come and we'll try to kick into a higher gear in the homestretch."

Coach's comments: "Brunswick defeated Choate by a 6-1 score for the second time this season, but the competitiveness of this contest was much greater than the December match. The Choate boys competed extraordinarily well against this very strong team from Greenwich, winning at least a game in over half the matches played. More importantly, it appears as though our squad was in command of far more mental toughness than in our last outing; coach Tom Foster and I were very proud of how we played against Brunswick--a team still undefeated in New England. While the varsity squads battled, the Choate JV coasted to a 5-2 win over Brunswick in record time."

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars defeated the Winged Beavers comfortably in this Founders League match. We have a string of contests in the next week in which we'll be favored and we'll want to capitalize on these opportunities to build our confidence heading into a much-anticipated showdown with archrival Deerfield next Wednesday and then into the New England tournament."

Coach's comments: "Although both interscholastic contests ended in lopsided victories for the Choate team, the day was not without its drama. In the Westminster showdown, the top three matches were particularly interesting: Ryan Phelan was stretched to five by Wallingford Juniors alum Morgan Phillips before shutting him out in the final game; Chris Miller was down 2-8 in the first game of his tilt, only to shake off his 'bus legs' to come storming back to win that game and then the next two; and John Bryant weathered his own sloppy play and some skillful shot-making from his opponent to rebound from a 4-8 deficit in the fifth to post a win in an emotional battle at #3. We expected a sweep in this Founders League match-up and--although it wasn't always pretty--we got it. But this Westminster team is young, talented, and well-coached and will be a force to be reckoned with next season."

Coach's comments:
"The St. George's team was the least
experienced of the three squads present today, but the top two players from
Newport gave their Wild Boar counterparts some trouble as Chris Miller was
pushed into a fifth game for his victory and Ryan Phelan was generally
outplayed by Andrew Scott--who has lost but one interscholastic match all
season--before the Choatie had to retire with a mildly sprained ankle.
"I
am hoping we can ride the momentum of the day's twin wins into our final two dual meets and the
New England tournament next week."

Coach's comments:
"The Wyverns squad that arrived at the Johnson
Athletic Center to play Choate in its final Founders League match of the season
was decimated by illness and short three of its starters. Full credit to the
athletes on this very young squad for battling gamely throughout in spite of
being a bit outgunned. Having seen a number of the K-O players compete over the
years at our Choate Juniors event, it's clear to me that they are improving by
leaps and bounds.
"Following the head-to-head varsity contest, the K-O team took on the
Wild Boars second seven and won the top three matches in this tilt with some
shrewd and gritty play. The Kingswood program is developing some impressive
talent and will only get stronger in the years to come with the recent addition
of squash courts on the school's West Hartford campus."

Coach's comments: "The heart of this Big Green line-up was particularly strong this year; indeed this was the deepest and most talented squad we've seen from our rival in some time. Deerfield posted its first win over the Wild Boars in a number of years by dominating play in the middle of the ladder. Choate took the top two matches and had its chances to close out the #7 tilt before the D.A. player saved multiple match points to pull out a win. Other than that, we were generally outplayed by the home team."

Coach's comments: "The end-of-season tournament was largely a successful one for Choate this year. This was the first season we were able to have all seven varsity players in the event and our depth enabled us to accrue a lot of points. A first-round loss at #3 was costly, probably knocking us out of our expected top five finish as a team. But in general the individual achievements were quite creditable: #4 Jack Fennebresque '04 was a main draw semifinalist; #2 Chris Miller '01, #6 Geordie MacLeod '01, and #7 Nick Cobbett '03 earned quartefinal berths; #5 David Morris '02 won the consolation flight; and senior co-captains Ryan Phelan and John Bryant were consolation finalists at #1 and #3, respectively."

Coach's comments: "On the day the Wild Boars arrived in England, they were given the chance to work the jet lag out of their systems in a scrimmage against a makeshift squad consisting of the Brigands (a traveling men's team), a couple of Lancing College's top players, and local squash pro Graham Stevenson. Among the highlights of these informal matches was Ryan Phelan's comeback from 2-7 in the fourth game en route to a hard-earned victory in the fifth. Coach's comments:
"We
have been lucky to have maintained such an enjoyable relationship with
Lancing, having played them in squash
on both sides of the Atlantic in recent years (and we met them in soccer
here once as well). In the third meeting of the
two squash teams since 1997, Choate handled its hosts comfortably this
time around, as Lancing is in something of a rebuilding phase. (During our
1997 tour, this side was easily the strongest English schoolboy squad we faced.)
In the only match we lost, Mike Gelinas came back from 2-7 in the fifth to force
an overset, only to lose by a razor-thin margin.
"Lancing has a
beautiful campus near the sea not far from Brighton and is known for
possessing one of the finest school chapels to be seen in England."

Coach's comments: "Wycliffe enjoys a reputation as a squash power in Britain, with a program unlike anything found on our side of the Atlantic. The school awards a handful of squash scholarships--an unusual phenomenon over there--and the players we faced were all distinguished at county or national levels and play at top levels of international tournament competition. Thus it was no surprise that Choate lost all but one of the matches played. Geordie MacLeod defeated the #2 girl from Denmark (#16 in the European rankings) in a gritty match."

Coach's comments: "Upon our arrival at Eton College, we met our hosts at the main entrance to the school, with a central courtyard around a statue of Henry VI, who founded the school in 1440. Eton's 1991 visit to Choate was the start of our school's squash relationship with a number of English schools in the last decade. Ten years ago a strong Eton squad soundly defeated us at our own version of the game (we were still playing hardball then) and the Etonians put up a good fight in defeat this time around as well. They were wonderful hosts, as well, as the Choate boys dispersed to various houses around campus for the night's stay. Chapel service in the morning was the rendezvous point for the squad, as we were joined by the girls' side of the squad."

Coach's comments: "Choate was fortunate indeed to have been invited to join the Eton/Harrow fixture, as we competed with the two best known private schools in the country in a triangular affair. Harrow School is generally considered the birthplace of the sport of squash racquets and provided a memorable stop on our '97 tour. The Harrovians returned the visit in the fall of 1999. In spite of missing #3 player John Bryant--who departed for Florida and baseball training camp the morning of these final two matches--the Wild Boars took all but two of the contests against Harrow and six of the nine against Eton College."
