Coach's comments: "This match was an impressive debut for this year's Wild Boars JV. Happily, we arranged matches for all twelve players. Though Williston is clearly in a rebuilding mode this season, the fact that the Choate players were so dominant against another school's varsity may be a harbinger of good things to come. Saturday's results will tell us more."

Coach's comments: "The JV juggernaut rolls on, posting a slew of straight-game wins in an afternoon in which most guys played multiple matches. (Messrs. Bryan and Phelan also played exhibition matches in the varsity match against Tabor.) Brunswick will be expected to put up more of a fight next week, so we need to keep improving and prepare to play our very best squash."

Coach's comments: "In our first truly competitive match of the young season, we dropped a close 4-3 result to the visiting Bruins. This was a perfect early-season showdown: tight enough to demonstrate that we can mix it up with even the best JV teams, but also an indicator that we still have some work to do. The three Wild Boars who won did so in convincing fashion. Two other matches--at #1 and #4--could have gone either way. And in the #6 and #7 tilts, our players visibly improved as their matches progressed, showing they could adapt to adversity. We will see Brunswick again in February and hope to reverse the outcome."

Coach's comments: "Given the two-hours-plus travel time to Andover, a decisive win for our squad was particularly satisfying. This day--when virtually all Choate and P.A. winter teams face off--always has a special energy to it. In our contest, sandwiched between girls' varsity and JV matches beforehand and a four-team varsity boys' extravaganza to follow, most of the Wild Boars players dispatched their opponents as though they had a train to catch. The competition was good right down through the roster and the Choate players rose to the occasion nicely. At the lower end of the ladder, our boys had a bit of trouble adjusting to the now unfamiliar narrow courts. A special pat on the back to Matt Novick for settling himself in the fifth game to win his match. It is also noteworthy that Messrs. Abbott, Chiang, Mestre, and Phelan remain undefeated in JV action thus far this season."

Coach's comments: "This was a wonderful day in that Taft was willing to bring as many boys as they could fit into a van, so we contested a total of thirteen matches. Among the top seven, the competition was very stiff, as three matches went the distance and another two were settled in four games. The Wild Boars were in good form, winning a total of 11 contests. And even in the two that we dropped, our players battled back bravely from 0-2 deficits, demonstrating considerable grit. This result should give us some confidence as we prepare to face the only team to beat the Choate JV last season: the Big Green of Deerfield."

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars bested archrival Deerfield with surprising ease, given the relative strength of the Big Green varsity this year and the fact that the only blemishes on an otherwise undefeated campaign for our JV a year ago were two losses to D.A. In every way we outplayed our opponents this time around. Our guys are starting to play a lot smarter squash: using the entire court, building shot sequences, and taking the pace off the ball when appropriate. There's still lots to work on, but this contest showed how much improvement the boys have realized thus far this winter."

Coach's comments:
"We
left a couple of our top JV players at home in this rematch with the Williston
varsity in order to facilitate a more competitive contest. We got the tight
match-up we wanted, as the two squads split the individual tilts more or less
down the middle. Of course if a team is to win every other match, it's better to
win at the odd-numbered positions, and fortunately for Choate, that's just what
we did.
"No
doubt the unfamiliar North American courts worked to the home team's advantage.
This is the first season we have not had the chance to practice on narrow
courts--not that we're complaining!--so each of our players needed to adjust to
the very different dimensions and demands of the Williston courts. As the
results above suggest, some adapted better than others."

Coach's comments: "The Rhinos offered very good competition once again; the Taft squad is talented, well coached, and well behaved and made us work hard for this win. The match of the day was Bobby Dearington's: in an impressive rally erasing an 0-2 deficit, he wore down his opponent with a combination of consistent depth and sharp shooting up front. The team result should give us some confidence heading into our rematch with Brunswick--the only squad to beat us this year."

Coach's comments: "We had every ambition of reversing our December loss to Brunswick--the only blemish on this team's record--but we wound up on the wrong end of a hard-fought and close contest. Brunswick has quite a pool of talent--the Bruins varsity is far and away the best team in New England this year--and we couldn't assemble the fourth win we needed to avenge our early-season defeat. The day's winners performed admirably: Mark Goldberg prevailed in four despite being under the weather and Mike Gelinas and Arya Varthi each went the distance before decisive fifth-game victories clinched the points for the Wild Boars. Bobby Dearington looked to be on track for another comeback from 0-2 (which he pulled off in last week's Taft match) but the fourth game proved elusive despite staunch vocal support from the Choate varsity players. It seemed as Stephen Abbott and Mac Bartels each were on the verge of shifting the momentum of their matches in Choate's favor, too, but both lost third games by heart-breakingly close margins. So for the second time this campaign, this was 'the one that got away' and we'll have to settle for being the strongest JV in New England other than Brunswick! But we're not through quite yet: League opponents Hotchkiss and Westminster loom later this week and we finish the season with a trip to arch-rival Deerfield in nine days."

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars posted a clean sweep of the Hotchkiss squad, dropping only one of thirty-four games played. The visitors were gracious enough to have three of their players compete twice so that our entire available line-up could see action. The Choate boys held the advantage of greater experience and the results reflect that. We now gear up for our final League match of the winter: Westminster comes to town on Saturday."

Coach's comments: "The Choate JV posted two more victories in the midst of a very busy sports day on campus. The Wild Boars swept League rival Westminster without the loss of a game and held off a challenge from the deeper-than-expected Rhode Island team. We'll turn our focus now to the final outing of the 2001-2002 campaign as we head to the Emerald City next Wednesday."

Coach's comments: ""The Choate JV finished the season with a convincing win on the road. The Big Green were gracious hosts and provided opponents for the entire Wild Boars roster, plus the top two players from our thirds squad. As expected, our rivals from the north played better on their home turf than they did in Wallingford in January. The Deerfield line-up started a little higher on their ladder this time around while ours began a bit lower, so the squads were better matched in this meeting. Happily, the Blue and Gold took 10 of the 12 contests played to complete the 2001-2002 campaign with a well-earned victory and an impressive 14-2 record." - Ned Gallagher, coach."
