1-27-99 Hotchkiss School 2:30 Lakeville, CT 6 1
LAKEVILLE, CT--This was a hard-fought win for the boys' squash team. The score does not accurately reflect the intensity of the competition; the match was much closer than it appears. Captain Ted Bailey '99 at #1 and fifth former Kevin McCarthy at #4 played particularly courageous matches, as they both battled from behind to win their matches 3-2. Robert Park '99 (#2), Ryan Phelan '01 (#3), and #6 Charles Pasarell '99 all won in three games, while # 5 Stephen Fair '00 notched a four-game victory. Jos Thalheimer '01, filling in for injured John "Place Kicker" Bryant, lost his #7 contest.
1-30-99 Belmont Hill School 1:30 CRH 4 3
WALLINGFORD, CT--In an exciting match that went down to the wire, the Wild Boars prevailed over a talented and heretofore undefeated Belmont Hill squad by virtue of sixth former Robert Park's five-game win over Nick Lacaillade at #2 to break a 3-3 deadlock in the team scoring. Also notching victories for Choate were #5 Stephen Fair '00 (who also won in five), #6 Charles Pasarell '99, and #7 John "Place Kicker" Bryant '01.
1-30-99 Phillips Academy 5:15 CRH 4 3
WALLINGFORD, CT--Having slipped by Andover 4-3 just three weeks before, the Wild Boars anticipated a tough rematch today. Few would have imagined just how close this contest would get, however. Andover jumped to an early 3-1 lead. Victories by #2 Robert Park '99, #5 Stephen Fair '00, and #6 Charles Pasarell '99 levelled the dual match at three wins apiece, with Kevin McCarthy '00 on court for the deciding match at the #4 position. In the spirit of the day, McCarthy's match went into the fifth game, wherein the Choate player reached new heights of shotmaking brilliance in rebounding from a 5-8 deficit to clinch the decider by a score of 10-9. Both McCarthy and his Andover opponent Naveen Goala amazed their coaches and teammates with daring play in the clutch, each fending off multiple match points in the endgame. The Choate squad now heads into February with renewed confidence, having faced down two very tough teams today in hard-fought matches. Next up for the Wild Boars will be an away match at Trinity Pawling's new courts on Wednesday.
